The Iron Press

March 4, 2014

Whoever invented waffle sandwiches is seriously one genius! I mean, sandwiches made with waffle buns? It’s brilliant! With the recent hype all over Bruxie, this place is a hidden gem.

The Iron Press, located in the OC Mix in Costa Mesa, offers plenty of waffle sandwich selections to choose from. The atmosphere is one of a kind and completely different from other waffle places. The wall is full of art displays. The decor in the restaurant gives off a very modern and playful vibe.

Iron Press serves both savory and sweet waffles. The Belgian waffle is a dessert plate with fresh strawberry and banana slices, nutella drizzle, and tops with a huge scoop of ice cream of your choice, my friend and I decided to go with the simple vanilla. After all, you can’t really go wrong with vanilla! It’s a good mix of something crispy, sweet, warm and cold at the same time.

The Smoked Turkey Club and Prosciutto+ Gruyere waffle sandwiches are my two favorites. I’m not a fan of fried chicken and I avoid eating fried food. Therefore, I was looking for something lighter and healthier. I absolutely fell in love with the Prosciutto+ Gruyere waffle sandwich on my first bite! The waffles here are softer, not as crispy compare to Bruxie’s, but bring a more unique exotic flavor to your taste buds as the combination of each waffle sandwich is quite creative (however, it’s a hit-or-miss sometimes).

I suggest going to this place on weekdays because it does get crowded on weekends and the wait is usually about 20~30 minutes. They don’t have that many tables. Instead, most of the seatings are counter seatings, which are actually pretty cool because you get to watch your waffles being made. The portion they give is very generous. One thing to keep in mind, do ask your server to put the sauce on the side instead of covering your food because the waffles can get soggy.

By the way, The Iron Press also offers a great selection of beer. It’s the place to go if you want waffles and beer!
