Current Crush - Taipei Brunch Spots

October 20, 2017

The Antipodean

When Antipodean opened last Spring, I thought it would just be another café that you only go for the gram or the colorful kangaroo art mural right outside the cafe, but boy was I wrong! The Antipodean, an Australian inspired third wave coffee shop, is now my favorite spot to have a big, nice, satisfying brunch in Taipei. Nothing beats a full plate of deliciously cooked scrambled eggs, hash browns, grilled tomato, beans, mushrooms and fresh avocado. Their menu features an array of not only drooling but also aesthetically pleasing brunch items such as avocado baked eggs and acai bowl. TA is happily situated near MRT Gangqian station, tucked in a small alley, with a beautiful outdoor patio in front. Stop by on a sunny day, this place will not disappoint!

My must-order? Avocado Big Breakfast

Address: No. 4, Lane 26, Gangqian Road, Neihu District, Taipei, Taiwan

Plants

Wholesome and clean, organic and fresh. These are the words that come to mind when I think of Plants. A plant-based, gluten free eatery established in the East District of Taipei back in 2016. It is my go-to spot for a light and healthy lunch with friends. Don’t be lulled into the false thinking that you are paying too much for a few kale leaves. People seem to have misconception of vegan food as boring and bland, well, wait till you savor the absolutely gorgeous vegetarian offers at Plants that make us carnivores second guess our lifestyle for the duration of the meal. Who knew vegan food could be this good? From baked sweet potato fries with beet ketchup to chia seed pudding, there are plenty of options to choose from.

My must-order? Crackers with Hummus dip & acai bowl

Sugar Pea

Sugar Pea has been on my radar for some time after seeing so many mouth watering pictures online and hearing people rave about how good this place is, I finally made a pilgrimage to the new it spot in town. The first experience was so good that I literally went back 3 more times within the same month and tried 13 of the 16 total items on their menu. Yes, that is how good this place is. The banana pancake quickly picked up momentum within my group of friends but a personal favorite of mine is their chicken chipotle bowl with quinoa!

My must-order? Chicken chipotle bowl and steak salad

Address:  1F No.16 Alley 20 Lane 300 Section 4 Renai Road, Da’an District, Taipei, Taiwan

Untitled Workshop

Yes, this is the café with the hipster pineapple wallpaper that everyone is talking about, but can we just take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous looking their avocado toast is? The toast seems so simple, but with just one bite, you will quickly realize there is so much more than that. Fresh avocado slices go surprisingly well with chopped up chives, and the toast is finished off with chili flakes and a drizzle of olive oil. One thing I have to complain about living in Taiwan is that good avocados are hard to find and they are freaking expensive. Thank goodness for Untitled Workshop satisfying my constant avocado cravings. If you are in the mood for food, know that the selection is limited to avocado toast, smoked salmon bagel, and granola yogurt bowl.

My must-order? Avocado toast, duh!

Address: No. 10, Lane 253, Section 1, Fuxing South Road, Da’an District, Taipei, Taiwan

Fika Fika (Neihu location)

Fika Fika has gone the distance in making its second location into a bright and airy space marked by a distinctively raw, natural, minimalist design aesthetic, basically something you would see in a Kinfolk magazine. As the champion of 2013 Nordic C Roaster competition, Fika Fika sure knows how to make a delectable cup of joy. There are also some Panini and croissant sandwich options to enjoy your morning coffee with.

My must-order? Coffee!

Address: No. 40, Lane 321, Yangguang St., Neihu District, Taipei, Taiwan
